Supplements against ketosis

Cows need specific nutritional supplements after calving. Ketosis or lingering milk disease is the a metabolic disease that affects about 10% of dairy cows after calving, but there are large differences in the percentage of cows per farm.

Ketosis results from cows not consuming enough feed compared to the amount of milk produced immediately after calving, in other words, energy intake lags behind energy requirements. To make up for this shortfall, the cow breaks down her body fat, a process in which ketones are formed. The body can process small amounts of these waste products, but when there is an extreme energy shortage, it can no longer do so and ketosis develops.

Cows with ketosis become sluggish, have little appetite, do not absorb enough concentrate, give less milk and their condition declines rapidly. Ketosis is often the result of another problem, e.g. mastitis, uteritis, abomasum displacement, but also claw disorders. These condition affect feed intake negatively, causing cows to have a negative energy balance faster.
