Sulfamic acid is a moderately strong inorganic acid with the chemical formula H₃NSO₃. The substance occurs as a white to colorless, odorless, crystalline solid that is soluble in water. There it slowly hydrolyzes into ammonium hydrogen sulphate.

Sulfamic acid ensures better oxidation of nitrite to nitrate when converting ammonium to nitrate in the biological air scrubber. Ammonium is converted into nitrate via bacteria, but this process goes via nitrite: ammonium → nitrite → nitrate.

However, too high a concentration of nitrite inhibits the bacteria that help this process, which is why it is necessary to flush more (add extra water, the concentration drops and bacteria can continue to function properly). But this creates a very large volume of flushing water. By adding sulfamic acid the conversion of nitrite to nitrate is promoted, so less flushing is necessary because the nitrite concentration is already lower. The result is that much less drain water is produced (only less than half the volume that would otherwise be produced!!) Its processing is therefore much cheaper.
