The start of a new life starts in the farrowing pen. The farrowing pen is thoroughly cleaned, disinfected and heated before the sows enter. The sows not only have all sorts of bacteria and parasites on their skin, they are also found in the manure that sticks to the sow. The purpose of sow washing is to prevent all kinds of parasites and micro-organisms from transferring to the maternity center. Washing the sows can be done by means of a sow shower or in the farrowing pen if the sows were moved in. The piglets can become infected as soon as they come into contact with the manure. Microorganisms and the manure disappear by washing the sows well, so the piglets do not come into contact with possible pathogens.
