Immersion oil is a technique in microscopy to allow a higher magnification of the object.
When using the strongest objectives with a light microscope (see microscope), image distortion can occur due to uneven refraction of light between the air and the lens. To avoid this problem, one uses immersion oil which one applies between the specimen and the lens. This is because the refractive index of immersion oil is identical to that of glass.
